Abstract

The dexterity to find prognostic mathematical models of drug release from drug-eluting sutures has lots of possibilities that can improve our knowledge of such systems and enhance the controlled release of the drug. To determine the drug release profile from the sutures, it is essential to understand the mechanisms that guide the drug release, factors affecting the release and to calculate quantitatively the overall drug release kinetic parameters. Several mathematical models have been employed to determine the release behavior of sutures. This chapter discusses some of the recent works about the different release kinetic models, the mechanism, and the drug release behavior of sutures loaded with antiinflammatory drugs, antithrombotic drugs, antibacterial drugs, oxygen, and growth factors. This will enable us to understand the factors affecting the drug release rate in various sutures and how they can be modified for the rational design of sutures in future with controlled release characteristics.
