Abstract

The population growth, industrialization, and long-term droughts result in the occurrence of a wide range of contaminants in the surface and ground water. These contaminants when released into environment cause problem to human beings and the environment. Therefore, there is a need to remove these contaminants from wastewater. In this context, biological wastewater treatment systems serve as a good option to combat the problem of water pollution. The biological wastewater treatment system is a cost-effective and environment friendly technology for the treatment of wastewater. Advances in the technology have led to the evolution of several techniques for the removal of contaminants from wastewater. In this chapter, we discuss about the advancements and limitations of biological wastewater technology.
