Abstract

In the development of a pharmaceutical process, it is always desired to achieve a better process performance, which includes (but not limited to) improved product qualities, increased process flexibility, greater process efficiency, and reduced environmental impact. Such process optimization problems can be formulated and solved using mathematical approaches. In this chapter, the aim is to provide an extensive overview of the most common optimization problems in pharmaceutical process development. Furthermore, a brief review is given on various mathematical optimization methods that have been developed and applied to solve optimization problems. Finally, for a demonstration purpose, a case study is given on the optimization of a continuous direct compaction process.
