Abstract

Zinc-air batteries are of great interest to observers of metal-air battery chemistry. These batteries have been around for a long time in the primary form and now seem to be reaching the point where they may appear on the market in medium- to large-scale applications in the secondary form. Though not the most energy-dense batteries that exist in theory, the chemistry of zinc-air cells is very approachable with current technologies and highly cost effective. This chapter details the fundamentals of zinc-air cell chemistry, the factors which could make or break a desirable commercialization of this technology, and recent advances in zinc-air battery chemistry that are driving the present research environment. Other metal-air systems will also be discussed using zinc-air as a baseline point of comparison.
