Abstract
This chapter explains why toxicity testing is carried out for the purposes of protecting human health or the environment. The traditional reliance on animal testing and the challenges faced in the journey from developing to accepting non-animal methods are discussed, along with the roles of different players, including academia, industry, contract research organisations, governmental authorities and non-governmental organisations.
