Abstract
In polymeric reactions, the energy resulting from ultrasonic causes the degradation of polymer chains and so creates radicals responsible for the initiation of the polymerization process. This chapter includes information about ultrasound-assisted emulsion polymerization, bulk and suspension polymerization, ring-opening polymerization, preparation of hydrogel polymers, synthesis of copolymers, phase-transfer catalysis polymerization, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) procedure, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and polymer nanocomposites preparation. Ultrasonic waves have provided a convenient means for dispersing one monomer into the medium complexes without the need for a chemical initiator or external reaction stabilizers. Also, kinetic studies for most of the above polymerization methods have revealed that the polymerization rate, decrease in polymer size, and molecular weight distribution are affected by ultrasonic energy.
