Abstract

The development of dynamic plastics that can self-repair materials properties on demand will provide tremendous leaps forward in the ability to reprocess commodity plastics on a global scale. To this end, the utilization of dynamic, supramolecular bonds as reversible cross-links has the potential for great impact. These supramolecular bonds have been implemented for a vast range of polymers and materials with differing levels of dynamicity depending on the interaction. Supramolecular interactions utilized in self-healing materials are described herein and include such dynamic bonds as host–guest complexes, ligand–metal coordination, hydrogen bonding, dynamic covalent bonds, and electrostatic interactions.
