Abstract

This chapter covers the issues of safety and labelling in 3D printed food by utilising hypothetical scenarios. It starts by presenting possible uses for 3D printed food and the implications that come with such uses. The chapter then explores the safety issue in both the short- and long-term consumptions of 3D printed food in the cases of food poisoning and permanent changes to the human body. It goes on to investigate the labelling issue through four scenarios: (1) food printing the majority of the packaged food for the mass population, (2) food printing only a small portion of the packaged food for the mass population, (3) food printing on sight before packaging, and (4) food printing at home. The chapter closes by analogising the safety issue of 3D printed food with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations over food safety in the United States and the labelling issue of 3D printed food with the ongoing litigation over genetically modified organism (GMO) food.
