Abstract

This chapter presents a discussion of regulations in place around the world at the time of writing this book. The intent of this chapter is to provide the reader with an understanding of what regulations exist at this time. The regulatory landscape is dynamic and varies according to the nation or nations in which the pipeline infrastructure exists. The regulatory bodies may include national, regional, and local government agencies, or even a combination of these regulatory agencies. The actual level of oversight may include a single entity, as may apply to an intrastate pipeline, or it may include different national regulations as well as local regulations for a pipeline system that crosses national borders, such as from Russia to Ukraine or Germany to Italy. Regulations for pipelines that transition from one nation to the next may also include international contracts and requirements, as well as right-of-way agreements.
