Abstract

Wojciech Dmowski's entry into fluorine chemistry was just incidental and he progressed through a chain of fortunate events and the goodwill of a number of friendly persons. His doctoral work was with sulfur tetrafluoride. The next milestone on his “fluorine way” was a two-year stint (1974–1976) in the UK at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). His task was to reinvestigate oligomerization reactions of hexafluoropropene and tetrafluoroethylene under conditions of high fluoride ion concentration and in the presence of crown ethers. Cooligomerization of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropene was achieved for the first time, giving ten new highly-branched perfluoroolefins ranging from C5F10 to CllF22. At Warsaw, he worked on fluoroalkene chemistry and on fluorination of carbonyl compounds with sulfur tetrafluoride.
