Abstract

Obesity, the abnormal excessive growth of adipose tissue and accumulation of abdominal fat, results from the combined effects of excess energy intake and reduced energy expenditure. It is also known to be an underlying risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Thus, recuperating proper dietary habits is of increasing importance. Both the scientific community and the general public are showing increased interest in the role of phytochemicals in maintaining health and preventing disease. In this chapter, the potential of two materials containing polyphenolic components are reviewed. First, various flavonoids derived from Nelumbo nucifera leaves have shown an inhibitory effect upon diet-induced obesity through the activation of the β adrenergic pathway. Second, black tea polyphenols can prevent obesity through inhibition of intestinal lipid absorption by blocking pancreatic lipase activity.
