Abstract

Traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) formulae have been used for over 1000years and most of them are composed of many herbs, which contain complicated chemical constituents. A growing body of evidence has demonstrated that monitoring plasma concentrations of TCM using modern pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics is essential to ensure optimal drug efficacy and to assess therapeutic efficacy, especially in vivo. Most of the published reports have selected one or several so-called representative compounds as the targets to investigate the pharmacokinetics of the whole prescription. However, little has been focused on the multicomponents of TCM formulae based on the combination of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic approaches.
