Abstract

This chapter highlights a number of mitigation best practices from the United States and other countries around the world. The discussion begins with several best practices identified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during Hurricane Ike in 2008 that include building codes, buyout, and business continuity. The city of Cedar Rapids implemented the Cedar Rapids River Corridor Redevelopment Plan after it was devastated by a massive flood that same year. The Shelter Etowah program is a model initiative that provides a list of refuges where the residents of Etowah County, Alabama, can take shelter during severe weather emergencies. Also, the text covers several case studies for jurisdictions that integrate mitigation best practices into planning. Finally, the chapter provides details about the Safe Island Programme (SIP) in Maldives, Climate Change Adaptation Project in Canada, Seismic Retrofit Program in the Philippines, the safe use and restoration of natural gas by private entities in Japan, animal protection during disasters in Australia, and the Multipurpose Cyclone Shelter Programme (MCSP) in Bangladesh, which are some of the exemplary mitigation projects at the international level.
