Abstract

In this chapter, we aim to showcase the importance and necessity of an inevitable transition toward smart wearable sensors in Industry 4.0 era via Internet of things (IoT). Herein, the role of Internet, IoT, Fog computing, new digital technologies such as big data analytics, machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, and also smartphones in the development of ideal smart wearable sensors through Internet of Wearable Things (IoWT) technology are discussed along with the timeline and philosophy behind IoWT devices. Moreover, an exemplary Edge-Fog-Cloud model based on using smartphones as IoT gateways is highlighted for better functionality and interoperability of wearables toward IoWT. The current challenges and future directions of IoWT are highlighted as well. Given the fascinating features of IoWT devices, we believe that these smart sensors can play a pivotal role in the development of future smart cities and even in the prediction and prevention of the next possible epidemics/pandemics.
