Abstract

This chapter discusses Fusarium species and their specific profiles of secondary metabolites. The profile of secondary metabolites produced by Fusarium species is still unclear. One of the major reasons for this confusion is the large number of misidentifications or insufficient characterization of the producer strains. The difficulties in identification are because of the fact that taxonomic systems, and identification-keys, are based primarily on morphological criteria difficult to recognize, and the fact that Fusarium strains can easily deteriorate in culture. Furthermore, different taxonomic systems may be used between which there may be no or very little, cross-reference possible. The chemical detection of the compounds produced may also contribute to the confusion, as the analytical conditions might have led to misidentification of metabolites. The chapter presents the profile of secondary metabolites within Fusarium based on the results of an extensive literature survey and experimental work.
