Abstract

This chapter describes the construction, mechanism, and performance characteristics of conventional universal, element-selective, and structure-selective detectors for gas chromatography. These are classified by mechanism as ionization-based (flame ionization, thermionic ionization, electron-capture, photoionization, and barrier discharge); bulk physical property (thermal conductivity); optical (flame photometric, chemiluminescence, atomic emission); and electrochemical (electrolytic conductivity) detectors.
