Abstract

The chapter starts with the basic concepts concerning wave forces on small cylinders: in-line force, transverse force, Morison equation, and drag and inertia coefficients. Then, the chapter provides fresh evidence of the effectiveness of the Morison equation, with the results of two recent, small-scale field experiments on wave forces on truncated vertical cylinders and on horizontal submerged cylinders. Finally, the chapter gives a worked example of an estimate of the in-line force exerted by the largest wave in the lifetime on an ideal frame structure. For this aim, the chapter supplies a FORTRAN program employing the quasi-determinism theory for calculating particle velocities and accelerations to be used in the Morison equation.
