Abstract

This chapter introduces a section of the book devoted to the combination of big data and advanced analytics, including the role of artificial intelligence techniques such as machine learning. The chapter opens with the question of whether big data can save your life, with the conclusion that big data plus analytics will be saving lives across many different spheres of activity, from medicine to security. The concept of the four V's of big data—volume, velocity, variety, and veracity—is explained with references to how each of these dimensions relates to the types of big data that is or may come to play a significant role in physical security systems. Sources of data are tied back to traditional electronic security devices and new sources from IoT, mobile, and other data generation technologies. The chapter also profiles certain barriers to the use of big data in physical security—namely, the slow pace of cloud adoption and its negative effect on data aggregation at scale.
