Abstract

This chapter describes the new materials and the design issues of body armors to protect the wearer from penetrative threats, including bullets, fragments, spikes, and stabs. In this regard, high-performance fibers and related textiles and composites are introduced to protect the person against low-level fragmentation to bulleted ballistic threats as well. Also the testing and the performance standard of these kinds of textiles are provided precisely. Conversely, the nanostructures as the reinforcement components in protective textiles have been investigated. Considering the move toward the third generation of textiles, the incorporation of high-performance fibers with electronic components into textiles have opened a new world of possibilities for protection of humans against different threats and in the relief efforts following the damage caused by projectile impacts. In this chapter, the effort has been made to review the most recent developments in bulletproof, stab, and spike-resistant textiles.
