Abstract

This chapter introduces representative and mainstream technologies based on East Asian cultural norms. The available methods can be classified into three types: direct entry methods without using a predictive method and predictive entry methods using either a phonetically based or a shape-based approach. These three types of entry method are widely used to represent Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, respectively. All three types are used in and are well developed for all three languages. East Asian countries share a distinct culture of ideogram use. This difference from western culture has led to the generation of unique writing systems and related entry technologies. The technologies based on prediction constitute one example of this, with their development dating back nearly 50 years. These technologies have been generalized in terms of other languages and are now being applied worldwide. As it happens so often, variety in needs and practices has provided a source of new universal technologies.
