Abstract

For our energy needs, we are dependent on limited reserves of coal and petroleum, which are subjected to depletion based on their usage. The availability of different types of solid waste, that is, organic biomass resources has the potential to be used as a source of renewable energy. With the help of thermochemical and biochemical processes, solid waste can be converted into energy. The efficient conversion of solid waste into energy resources solves a two-way problem, that is, energy generation and solid waste management (SWM). Conversion of solid waste by the use of biochemical methods is efficient and economical. Production of biogas from anaerobic digestion and bioethanol/biobutanol has immense potential as a fuel in future. Here, we will the major pretreatment methods, such as solid waste treatment process, with an emphasis on strategies of SWM.
