Abstract

This chapter discusses sports and pastimes of Canada. Although it is a country that has borrowed most of its habits and customs from abroad, Canada has made many original contributions in the field of sports. This is mainly because a generous winter season that provides abundant ice and snow and bright sunshine in which it can be enjoyed. Native games and sports were originated by the Canadian Indians and Eskimos, and present-day Canadians are still enjoying them. In Great Days in Canadian Sport, Ryerson Press, 1957, Henry H. Roxborough deals with outstanding events and figures of Canadian athletics and games. Significant achievements in sports are recounted from the time of the 1867 tour of the Caughnawaga Indian Lacrosse Team. In Football Today and Yesteryear, Harlequin Books, Winnipeg, 1962, Tony Allan tells the story of Canadian football from the early 1920s, when this game was king, to the present day, with its emphasis on national east-west competitions and the Grey Cup competitions. Cricket in Eastern Canada by Colin F. Whiting, Colmur Publications, Montreal, 1963, is a history of cricket in Canada as it has been played since its introduction in Montreal, 134 years ago.
