Abstract

Nowadays, there are emerging applications in building operation and management to advance the idea of “smart building.” Examples are demand-driven HVAC operation management and indoor localization-based smart building service. These smart building applications are based on new information system hardware. Despite the increasing interests of smart buildings, current research efforts has mainly been made at one particular level such as application, while ignoring the interactive relationship among different levels. Designing an efficient smart building application requires a comprehensive understanding of information system hardware. It is imperative to investigate the design trade-offs and considerations when architecting smart buildings. We envision the necessity and importance of application and hardware co-design. Through a case study, we show it is absolutely necessary to optimize the smart building design from a system perspective by leveraging the benefits of application and hardware co-design.
