Abstract

Hydrogen as a secondary energy carrier within a sustainable energy system is capable of balancing fluctuating renewable resources in energy storage applications and replacing fossil energy carriers, such as hydrocarbons in mobility applications. Pathways for the efficient storage of hydrogen are discussed; these include compressed gaseous hydrogen storage, liquefied hydrogen, liquid chemical hydrogen storage, and solid chemical energy carriers. An outlook for the utilization of hydrogen within an efficient energy system is presented.
