Abstract

The exploration of alternative fiber sources is a paramount pursuit considering the environmental impact of increasing demand for pulp and paper products. Reed grass is one of the nonwood biomasses that display potential to become raw material for pulp and papermaking, considering the increasing requirement of long fiber in papermaking industries. The utilization of reed grass will contribute to the prevention of environmental problems by substituting a quantity of wood-based pulp and papermaking. Because of its low lignin and high cellulose contents, reed grass paper has high tensile strength. However, the properties of pulp and paper are also affected by the pulping method used and pulping conditions. This chapter will thoroughly discuss the potential of reed grass from a recently developed plantation to produce high-quality pulp and paper. The discussion highlights characteristics of reed grass pulp and paper, the recently developed method of reed grass pulping, and opportunities for its application.
