Abstract

Optimization refers to the identification of the “best” solution from among the set of candidate solutions. An optimization formulation typically involves the minimization or maximization of an objective function subject to a number of constraints. Optimization is a very effective and powerful tool that aids in the systematic solution of process integration problems. The principles of optimization theory and algorithms are covered by various books. Additionally, for a retrospective and future prospective on optimization, the reader is referred to the following publications. This chapter presents an overview of formulating and solving optimization problems.
