Abstract

The production of biofuels under a biorefinery scheme requires a correct distribution and planning of the supply chain. The proper planning of the transportation of raw materials and products, together with an adequate location of the facilities, is indispensable for a sustainable production. In addition, high value-added products must be included in the production planning to ensure the economic feasibility of the biorefinery. This chapter describes the required elements as well as the mathematical tools used for the selection of the optimal supply chain. Moreover, the impact of the intensified processes in the development of the supply chain is described. Finally, a case study illustrating the application of the above tools is presented.
