Abstract
Extensive use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers generates challenges to the farming sector and human health. Therefore alternative approaches are needed to manage the issues with plant protection and pathogen management. Biocontrol technology is relevant and is based on the efficient use of living organisms to control the pathogens. The development and commercialization of microbial biocontrol agents are hence suitable alternatives to the chemical agents and they have a healthy impact on the environment and health. This chapter focuses on the microbial biocontrol agents and their commercial applications. Topics presented are the types and modes of application of biocontrol agents, the mechanism behind the bioagents, commonly used microbial biocontrol agents, challenges with these agents, and future aspects of biocontrol formulations.
