Abstract

The chapter discusses the fundamental similarities and differences between analog and digital layout. It discusses the hidden components embedded in printed circuit board (PCB). It explores how to improve A/D converter accuracy and resolution. Focusing on the interaction between the PCB and the converter improves results. The chapter discusses two layout techniques, and explores the way to do a poor layout and the way to fix it. There are many similarities between analog and digital layout practices. As the digital systems get faster and faster, the digital circuit looks more analog than not. The fundamentals of a circuit board layout apply to analog circuits as well as digital circuits. One fundamental rule of thumb is using uninterrupted ground planes. Analog circuitry has two strikes against it in the environment. The noise margins are much lower than digital, and it is not unusual to have high impedance traces.
