Abstract

This final chapter is dedicated to innovation in forensic science in general and forensic analytical chemistry specifically. Innovation and fundamental scientific studies are essential to ensure and sustain the added value of forensic investigations. Society, crime, and law and order are dynamic and as new criminal activities, evidence materials and laws emerge, forensic institutes have to adapt to ensure that their services remain relevant. Additionally, progressing scientific insights and technological breakthroughs continuously offer new opportunities to assist criminal investigations and solve crime. This chapter will allow the reader to understand the why and how of innovation in forensic science. These insights will be used to address three innovation areas in forensic analytical chemistry, the detailed chemical analysis of micro traces, the interpretation of chemical evidence at activity level, and rapid, on-scene chemical analysis of forensic evidence materials.
