Abstract

Nepal is situated in one of the most seismically active areas on earth. Despite the severity of earthquake hazard in the country, organized earthquake disaster risk management in Nepal is a relatively new phenomenon compared to many other countries. Earthquake risk in Nepal has significantly increased in recent years, mainly due to rapid population growth, uncontrolled development, poor construction practices, the absence of effective earthquake safety considerations, and a general lack of internalization of knowledge on earthquake safety among the public and government authorities. The death and destruction caused by the 1988 East Nepal earthquake triggered various initiatives that included raising earthquake risk awareness, developing and implementing building codes, and addressing the safety of school and hospital buildings through various improvements.
