Abstract

This chapter describes the software-defined radio digital signal processing (DSP) system built using LabVIEW. A software-defined radio essentially consists of a programmable communication system where functional changes can be made by simply updating the software. 4-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) scheme is often used for software-defined radio system. This modulation scheme is widely used for data transmission applications over bandpass channels such as FAX modem, high speed cable, multi-tone wireless, and satellite systems. For transmission in a QAM transmitter, pseudo noise (PN) sequences are generated to serve as the message signal. A PN sequence is often generated with a five-stage linear feedback shift register structure. Frame synchronization is required for properly grouping transmitted bits into an alphabet. In order to achieve this synchronization, a similarity measure, consisting of cross correlation is often computed between the known marker bits and received samples.
