Abstract

As a source of different antioxidants, bee pollen can be successfully applied in skin cosmetics production. Due to both lipophilic and hydrophilic properties (mainly influenced by botanical origin), bee pollen can advance emulsions and improve miscibility/stability in the oil/water system, which is essential for preparing different skin cosmetic products. Since several simple compounds are crucial for the antioxidant defense system in the skin, apart from enzymes such as superoxide dismutases, glutathione peroxidases, catalase, and the thioredoxin system, bee pollen can be applied as a cheap, readily available, and eco-friendly source of it. These advantages are particularly related to the following compounds: quercetin and apigenin and its derivatives, vitamins C and E, and some inorganic antioxidants such as zinc and selenium ions. In this chapter, a brief review of the possible application of bee pollen in skin cosmetics preparation is made to emphasize an excellent opportunity to use this bee product in the protection and health care of the skin.
