Abstract

It has been emphasized throughout this book that bloodstain pattern evidence benefits an investigation if it is applied from the first discovery of a crime scene that involves blood distribution. Training, however, has been predominately directed at homicide-oriented investigators. First responders, paramedics, firefighters, coroner’s deputies, local physicians, and so on may arrive first and direct later review toward suicide or accidental death, or misdirect toward homicide when the event was one of the former. Funds-strapped departments may breathe a sigh of relief if the call isn’t in favor of a high-cost homicide investigation, unless the perpetrator is seen by several reliable witnesses. As has been previously pointed out, the wrong call can end up being more expensive than a perceived quick and easy call. Murderers who get away with murder may kill again, which may then require opening old cases for review along with the new. There is also the loss of freedom for innocent people and ruined lives over wrong convictions.
