Abstract

Jewish law is an intricate system based on the inference and interpretation of classic sources. Generally, Judaism has embraced medical technology and promoted its use to advance health. When faced with modern medical technologies such as preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and screening (PGS), the authorities have shown a positive attitude but tend to limit the use of PGD and PGS to medical and not cosmetic use. This apparently neat division has been tested in various cases that demonstrate an overlap between medical and cosmetics, such as sex selection. Some authorities are permissive in such cases and indeed in specific circumstances. There is also concern regarding the safety of PGD and PGS as well as a fear that humans are playing God in employing this technology. Even with these concerns, we demonstrate that Orthodox Judaism has devised guidelines and case-specific guidance as to the best use of PGD and PGS.
