Abstract

A distribution system distributes electricity received through the transmission network. Reliability is a major concern in the electrical distribution network. The electric utility improves that reliability through tree trimming, construction design modification, installation of lightning arresters, use of animal guards, and so on. Instead of those unadventurous methods, there are different smart methods. Among them, using a smart grid system environment is becoming widespread in the modern period. It is a conventional electric power system that has good technology for purposes such as reliability improvement, integrating of distributed energy resources, and electricity market operations. Thus, this chapter tries to assess the reliability performance of the current Injibara distribution system using analytical methods for the years 2013–19 and suggest solutions of reliability improvement in an active distribution network. To make distribution reliable, sectional switches and distributed generation sources are placed to isolate the failures and distributed generations optimally by using the weighted sum harmony search algorithm. After applying the proposed solution, the reliability indices are improved in terms of improving system reliability.
