Abstract

The research on the alternative energy resources is increased over a past decade for meeting the increased load demands. This will help in reducing the dependency over the fossil fuel power generation and the greenhouse emissions by generating the environment friendly power. Thus, the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) like wind energy, solar PV, etc. is promoted forming microgrids to supply the loads at the local ends. The microgrid increases the efficiency of the system as transmission losses are minimized and provide reliable power supply to its consumers. This chapter provides an insight about the importance and need of the microgrid in the distribution network. The various advantages offered by the microgrid are also discussed in details and the classification of the microgrid is discussed on the basis of size and capacity, electrical power supply, and geographical locations. Further, the challenges and issues faced by the microgrid are discussed in details for AC, DC, and Hybrid AC/DC microgrids. The different methods existing in literature are given to obtain better understanding of the topic.
