Abstract

Before a disaster or other negative event occurs, special library personnel can give their family members peace of mind by describing their library’s preparations to protect personal safety. After a disaster, the first concern should be one’s personal safety in the library workplace, at one’s residence, and along the routes between these locations. It is important to resume library operations as soon as possible. After a negative event, library workers often have questions regarding the condition of library assets, job security and the continuation of the payroll, the timing of operational resumption, the security of library data, and the future of the library. Lone librarians—that is, those who are the sole employees in their libraries—fare better during and after negative events if they have already found ways to decrease the concerns that can arise from working alone.
