Abstract

Deploying a new database in a data center involves many tasks. It involves planning for the deployment of databases for development, testing, and QA, in addition to deploying databases for production. IT departments also need to plan and implement solutions for information protection at various levels within the infrastructure, as well as backup and recovery and disaster recovery solutions to provide business continuity in light of data center outages. Due to the many options available to organizations in an Oracle database for consolidation, management, monitoring, and security when migrating from another database, careful consideration of all pros and cons associated with a specific database feature or functionality is required. This chapter discusses crucial aspects of deployment of an Oracle database as well as topics such as consolidation and virtualization, along with best practices, to highlight their importance in building a highly scalable, manageable, and agile database platform. It is important to consider the impact of the operating system, database standardization, and consolidation when deploying Platform as a Service (PaaS) and SaaS offerings in addition to server virtualization as a means to support IaaS and PaaS offerings today. Oracle offers a complete solution for development, deployment, management, and monitoring of cloud services.
