Abstract
This chapter highlights that there are many powerful and free solutions for network reporting and troubleshooting available. The power of a visual aid, be it a graph, a pie chart, or whatever should never be underestimated. A simple graph can get the point across far more quickly than a page full of numbers. The relevant data presented in an easy-to-understand format can demonstrate the need for more Internet bandwidth. It could also be demonstrated that the usage of Internet streaming music is consuming all the bandwidth, and that with a policy change, a bandwidth upgrade is not needed. Depending on specific policies, reports could be generated for protocols of interest. A sniffer could be run to collect and graph statistics on its own, but having free software that will do it is a real time saver. If problems do arise, there are powerful and free packet sniffing solutions available to help in troubleshooting problems at the network level.
