Abstract

High-oleic natural oil varieties are defined as those oils that have an equal to or greater oleic fatty acid content of 70%. These new varieties have been developed primarily for their increased stability in food products, but this inherent stability has also found utility in many industrial applications. Better thermal and oxidative stability has proven useful in several lubricant applications, including hydraulic fluids, transformer oils, and even motor oils. The greater oleic acid content has also made these oils better feedstocks for chemical modification to produce surfactants, plasticizers, and asphalt additives since their more uniform molecular structure leads to higher yields and fewer side products. Many researchers are actively evaluating these new oil varieties for industrial product development, and their use while still in its initial stage should grow significantly in the coming years.
