Abstract
Over the past 40 years, the reform in China, on the one hand, has pushed forward the integral development of economic society and opened up agricultural modernization, and, on the other hand, it has brought small farmers who obtained independent production and operation rights during the reform to the pressure of market competition. However, Chinese farmers are still in the prevalent dilemma of “small farmers facing the big market.” Taking the Zhejiang Yulin watermelon cooperatives as an example, this chapter sorts out cooperatives’ operation mechanisms, and compares the production costs and benefits of cooperative members and noncooperative members. Furthermore, the development causes and the effectiveness and resistance of the development of the Yulin watermelon cooperatives are analyzed. This chapter also summarizes some useful experiences in the development and operation of cooperatives, and finally gives some useful suggestions.
