Abstract

Life transitions are analyzed for ways in which they affect components of meaning in life. Six challenges to meaning are identified and described: physiological changes, disruption of norms, overreliance on social network, stressful autonomy, psychosocial vulnerability, and biographical disruption. Each of these challenges has the potential to erode the three domains of meaning in life, coherence, purpose, and mattering.
