Abstract
In this chapter, sources of inaccurate results in commonly ordered enzymes and other protein biomarker assays, including albumin and total protein measurements, are discussed. In addition, analytical issues with commonly measured enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, amylase, lipase, LDH, and CK) and protein biomarkers used in the evaluation of cardiovascular disease (cardiac troponin and B-type atrial natriuretic peptide) are also addressed. Guidelines for clinical use of the tests, optimization of pre-analytical steps, analytical methodologies, and sources of interferences and misleading results are discussed with emphasis on how to eliminate potential errors in measuring these analytes in clinical setting.
