Abstract

This chapter will briefly discuss the history of biometrics in the United States and abroad. It will also provide an in-depth analysis on emerging trends and technology in the biometrics sector today as it relates to society, private organizations, and the law enforcement community to include local, state, and federal government agencies. Biometrics is defined as the process by which a person's unique physical and other traits are detected and recorded by an electronic device or system as a means of confirming identity. In today's era, biometric data are considered to be a metric which directly relates to independent human characteristics through a form of independent proof of identification and access control. The features of biometric metrics and data can be used to categorize data in individuals and groups of individuals who may or may not be under direct surveillance. These specific features include voice, eye, and fingerprint data.
