Abstract

This chapter defines urban transport systems and provides an overview of the classic analytic framework proposed by Manheim, Florian, and Gaudry to evaluate, design, and operate them. The taxonomy of urban transport systems is broadened to include such emerging mobility service paradigms as mobility-as-a-service. The role of urban transport systems engineers is discussed and use cases are presented to motivate the rest of the chapters.
