Abstract

This chapter discusses the foundations of algebra, including the real number system, real number line, polynomials, factorizations, rational expressions, integer exponents, rational exponents and radicals, and complex numbers. The chapter discusses the concepts of symbols and vocabulary of sets, the twelve axioms of a field, and the four properties of equality. The chapter further discusses the representation of real numbers geometrically on a number line and the concept of absolute value and properties. It also provides an overview of polynomials. The definition of an algebraic expression, evaluation of an expression, definition of an exponent, definition of monomial and of polynomial as the sum of monomials, degree of a monomial and polynomial, properties of real numbers applied to polynomials, and operations of addition and multiplication with polynomials are also presented in the chapter.
