Abstract

In this chapter the key elements and characteristics of what constitutes the structure of a protein, along with the associated nomenclature are reviewed. Next, the unique structural properties of proteins are discussed in relation to the challenging environment that needs to be studied, understood and overcome to successfully develop a commercial protein biopharmaceutical. The chapter then concludes with a brief look at some of the more innovative forms of biopharmaceutical that are being developed that place a greater challenge on the task of biophysical characterization.
