Abstract

This chapter explores the historical development, principles, applications, and technological readiness level of microbial electrochemical technologies. It also looks at the challenges such as low power density, high capital costs, and scaling up and ongoing research and development efforts continue to address these challenges. Microbial electrochemical technology holds immense potential for sustainable energy production, wastewater treatment, and environmental remediation. It represents a promising alternative to conventional approaches and has gathered significant attention in the scientific community. While further research and development are required to overcome existing challenges, the continued advancement of microbial electrochemical technologies will undoubtedly contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
