Abstract

The microbial electrochemical system is one of the promising wastewater management technologies which treat wastewater and simultaneously produce electricity and other value-added products. The MESs are the sub-set of bioelectrochemical systems which can harness energy from the biodegradable components of wastewater, using catalytic activities of microbes. In MESs, transportation of ions during electricity generation can be utilized for various chemical production, water desalination, and different resource recovery. MESs can offer a low cost and sustainable solution for energy generation. This chapter discusses the different types of MESs. It also elaborates some insights on the applications of MESs in various areas of benefits.
